Siding damage is a water problem, not a cosmetic one
Siding is a rain screen. It is not waterproof and was never meant to be — the house wrap and flashing behind it are what actually keep the wall dry. So when a panel cracks, a J-channel pulls loose, or a course unzips in high wind, the real risk is not the way it looks. It is that wind-driven rain now reaches the wrap, finds any gap in it, and wets sheathing and framing where nobody can see it.
That is why every siding job we do includes pulling a section and inspecting what is behind it. On storm-damaged Maryland homes we routinely find torn wrap, staple-only attachment, missing window flashing, and the early dark staining that means sheathing has been getting wet for several seasons.
Hail and wind damage on siding
Hail damage on vinyl reads as circular cracks, chips at the butt edge, or holes punched clean through on older, more brittle panels. On aluminum it shows as dents; on fiber cement, as chips and spider cracking. Wind damage is usually more obvious — panels unlocked from the course above, whole sections missing, or loose trim that rattles.
Storm-facing elevations take the hit. Across most of Prince George's, Charles, and Anne Arundel counties that means the west and south walls, where the strongest wind-driven rain arrives. We document all elevations regardless, because carriers commonly approve only the damaged wall unless the report demonstrates why partial repair will not produce an acceptable result.
When your siding is discontinued
This is the single most common complication on older homes, and it is worth understanding before an adjuster visits. Vinyl profiles and colors are retired constantly, and a ten-year-old panel will not match a current one even in the same nominal color, because UV exposure has already shifted the existing siding.
When a reasonable match does not exist, most policies provide for replacing the full elevation so the finish is uniform. We document the discontinuation with supplier confirmation and make that argument to the carrier on your behalf. It is a routine, winnable argument — but only if someone actually makes it.
Repair, replacement, and what comes with it
Partial repairs get matched material where a match exists, correct locking into adjacent courses, and re-flashed penetrations. Full-elevation and whole-house replacements include new house wrap, proper window and door flashing, and replacement of any damaged sheathing found during tear-off — photographed before it is covered.
Trim, soffit, fascia, and gutters are typically part of the same scope. Storms rarely damage siding in isolation, and replacing siding while leaving compromised fascia in place just moves the leak. If water already reached the interior, our mitigation crew dries the wall cavity before anything is closed up.
